<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
To get smooth skin, people usually exfoliate their skin with body scrubs made of small, scratchy beads, sugar, salt, or ground up fruit seed shells. There is a much more satisfactory way of scrubbing your skin, and that is using the Korean body scrub mitts or scrub towels. They get you smooth and clean, while making your skin pill up into little bits, you can actually see your skin come off!</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
<br /></div>
<a name='more'></a><br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
You can get a Korean scrub done in a Korean spa, a<b> </b>Jjimjilbang<b>,</b> where you would soak in a hot bath and then someone would scrub down your whole body, or you can just buy the scrub mitts that they use and do it yourself! This way you can go as hard or as gentle as you would like, though you still might need someone else to do your back. You can also reuse the mitt. </div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
Using a cream body scrub or body polish is sometimes difficult to use. You have to use them when your skin is not too wet, or sometimes even almost dry, otherwise the scrub is diluted and you don't get much exfoliation out of it. Your skin is also softer when wet, and using a cream body scrub when your skin is dry may not smooth your skin, and may just scratch it up. This is the advantage that the Korean scrub mitt has over the cream body scrub. You can use it when your skin is wet, and it also scrubs evenly.</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
The Korean scrub mitts can be purchased at a Korean market. They are usually pretty cheap. The ones pictured above were from H Mart and were only about $2 for four of them. </div>

<br /></div>
<h3 class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
How to use the Korean scrub mitts:</h3>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
1. If you have a bathtub, soak in hot water for at least 10 minutes. While soaking, you can also clean your skin with soap. If your bathroom does not have a bathtub and only a shower, you can do your usual shower routine and scrub yourself at the end.</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
<br /></div>
<table align="center" cellpadding="0" cellspacing="0" class="tr-caption-container" style="margin-left: auto; margin-right: auto; text-align: center;"><tbody>
<tr><td style="text-align: center;"><a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjG1wBoQD0PTS-1aMJ4THRgiYBz33rAAP-mfefyoWn1O_QuGjsThJzIwSpTwHgv8m6l-AXn6hsGaWYmrCKwOUkjOzRMM356E9sAFOCaTBfS7OOCMn0g5meV06k9S9PCkoYUAMU8OxOZ7Yg/s1600/P1120408.JPG" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: auto; margin-right: auto;"><img border="0" height="300" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjG1wBoQD0PTS-1aMJ4THRgiYBz33rAAP-mfefyoWn1O_QuGjsThJzIwSpTwHgv8m6l-AXn6hsGaWYmrCKwOUkjOzRMM356E9sAFOCaTBfS7OOCMn0g5meV06k9S9PCkoYUAMU8OxOZ7Yg/s400/P1120408.JPG" width="400" /></a></td></tr>
<tr><td class="tr-caption" style="text-align: center;">The mitt turned inside out</td></tr>
</tbody></table>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
2. After your skin is sufficiently softened from soaking in water, place the mitts over your hands. You can cover one or both hands with mitts. Some people use the mitts how they are straight out of the package with the tag sticking out, but I like to turn them inside out and then put my hands in. This way the tag isn't hanging out and also the corners and seams won't poke you. The towels are usually made with 100% viscose, and they also usually shrink quite a bit when you put them in water, so you may have to stretch the scrub mitt over your hand.</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
3. Scrub your body with the mitts! If you scrub over and over in the same spot, you should see your skin start to pill up into rolls of gray skin like in the picture below. It's quite gross but very satisfying, you know you are getting really clean! The mitts are very good for exfoliating your elbows and knees. I always have a hard time scrubbing these with cream body scrubs because the scrub beads usually move away from my pointy elbow or knee, but a scrub mitt doesn't have this problem.</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">

<tr><td class="tr-caption" style="text-align: center;">Gross and up close.</td></tr>
</tbody></table>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
4. When you are done scrubbing, you can soap yourself again to clean your freshly exposed skin. I usually skip this, I think scrubbing off layers of skin is good enough.</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
5. Make sure to rinse your scrub mitts of any skin residue, and leave them to try. This will prevent bacteria from growing on them and will help them last longer. </div>

Light skin has been a beauty ideals for Asians for a long time. A
woman with lighter skin is a sign that she does not have to do manual
labor and work outside. Light symbol has been a symbol of class. Of
course, things have changed these days. Tanned skin is not a sign of
social status among Western men and women, signifying that they have the
time and money to go on exotic vacations or to play sports for leisure.
But for many Asian women, having light skin is still something they
strive for. Not only light skin, but skin that is smooth and flawless.
Many skin lightening products also get rid of spots, evening out the
skin tone.<br />
<br />
Now, how did Asian women in the old days
whiten their skin? They used all sorts of strange products, from
nightingale droppings to poisonous lead. <br />

<b>Sake</b> was also used, as the kojic acid in it inhibits melanin in skin. <a href="http://orientalbeautysecrets.blogspot.com/2013/07/sake-as-part-of-asian-beauty-routine.html" target="_blank">Read about sake as a skin lightener in my post.</a><br />

Women in the Edo and Meiji period would whiten their face (as makeup) with a <b>lead</b> based face paint or powder. In a book from the Edo period for samurai class women, it advices "putting white powder on the face is a law which all women should obey. White powder is not only for make-up, nor only decorating yourself. . . .Since you were born a woman, you should not show your face without white powder even for just one day in your life"[2]. Of course, we now know lead is poisonous. <br />
<h3>
China</h3>
Chinese women wealthy enough to afford to do so, would eat<b> crushed pearls</b> to whiten their skin. <br />
<h3>
India</h3>
Women would bathe in <b>turmeric</b>. Turmeric is said to have anti-bacterial and anti-fungal properties,
and acts as an anti-inflammatory when ingested or used topically, so it
works well for calming skin with acne also. Turmeric powder mixed with
water, rose water, or lemon juice (for an extra whitening effect) can be
used as a scrub or a mask. It also may tinge your skin a yellowish
color, so you also get a healthy glow!<br />

Below are photos of some driving/walking gloves that I own. I bought them both at DAISO. I am very careful about protecting my hands from the sun. I usually put them in my pocket, wear gloves, or cover them with a long sleeve. After a trip to Hawaii I noticed I had a mole on my hand that grew, since at that time I did not protect my hands from the sun with sunscreen. Ever since then, I started to always wear sunscreen on my hands. Unfortunately, my hand modeling days are over, since I have a burn on my left hand from an iron.<br />

<br />
You may often see Asian women using umbrellas during the day as they walk around outdoors. This blocks the sun's direct, damaging rays. Although effective, the UV rays can still reflect off of other objects, such as sidewalks and buildings, so an extra layer of protection is still needed, which brings us to the next topic.<br />
<h3>
</h3>
<h3>
Sunscreen:</h3>
Asian women are also very diligent about wearing sunscreen. You may seem them in public, shamelessly looking in a compact mirror, re-applying sunscreen to their face. They wear it rain or shine. UV rays can actually go through clouds, so it is a good idea to continue to protect your skin with sunscreen even on a cloudy, winter day.<br />
<br />
In the U.S., there are limited varieties of sunscreens available in drugstores, with more varieties in specialty beauty stores. In Asia, there is a huge variety of sunscreens available. There are sunscreens in the form or liquids, and powders, not often found in the U.S., along with the usual cream and lotion sorts. Many of these sunscreens feature active mineral ingredients (like Titanium Dioxide and Zinc Oxide), as opposed to the chemical sunscreen ingredients. The mineral sunscreen provides broad spectrum protection, with the added benefit of evening out skin tone because the mineral sunscreens have a whitening effect, since they protect the skin by reflecting UV rays.<br />
<br />
<h4>
Liquid Sunscreens: </h4>
<br />
My personal favorites are the liquid sunscreens. My favorite brand is the Biore UV perfect milk, because it is pretty cheap and has a high SPF 50and PA+++, the highest UVA protection. The price range for this is usually $7 if you buy it in Asia, to $13 if you order online. One bottle also lasts me about three months.<br />

<h4>
Powder Sunscreens:</h4>
We are told that we are supposed to reapply sunscreen after every two hours or so, but it is often difficult to do if you are wearing cosmetics. This is where powdered sunscreen is really useful! You can simply layer it on top of your makeup. Below is a foundation SPF 25 compact by Mistine that I bought in Thailand. It was so cheap, only about $5 US.<br />

Powdered sunscreens attached to a brush are really convenient. One that I have tried was by Peter Thomas Roth:<br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEiuW7pvS60duwUGuaDR4bfFXT9Jase_eMO9bwtSMq_jk1nys09fAfeywzVD5_PucVs5nXe-v2E35UBMVDtJcJm3Cgkb5PniE0ts6o3v1flPcbS9Mq0oMcKwQLEHsCLrj6kfoWcaAPJVxko/s1600/peterthomas.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEiuW7pvS60duwUGuaDR4bfFXT9Jase_eMO9bwtSMq_jk1nys09fAfeywzVD5_PucVs5nXe-v2E35UBMVDtJcJm3Cgkb5PniE0ts6o3v1flPcbS9Mq0oMcKwQLEHsCLrj6kfoWcaAPJVxko/s1600/peterthomas.jpg" /></a></div>
I also bought the raw sunscreen ingredients, powdered zinc oxide and titanium dioxide. I put zinc oxide in a powder container and I usually mix a little in with my liquid sunscreen to add more protection to my sunscreen. It also gives my sunscreen an extra powdery texture, which is great for my oily skin. Be careful not to overdo it, you can look as white as a geisha.<br />
A word of caution: powdered sunscreens are dangerous in their application as you might inhale the powdered particles, which may cause cancer and other lung problems. Make sure you use a powdered sunscreen in a well ventilated area and hold your breath while you apply. Using a brush to apply puts more particles in the air than using a sponge applicator.<br />
<br />
Some Asian women are sunscreen hoarders. Here is my personal sunscreen collection for this Summer:<br />

<a href="http://home.rasysa.com/afloat-nagoya/style/image/51481_1_800x0.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="400" src="http://home.rasysa.com/afloat-nagoya/style/image/51481_1_800x0.jpg" width="266" /></a></div>
<br />
<br />
Notice how some Asian women, especially Korean and Japanese women, always seem to have perfectly styled and curled hair? What is their secret?<br />
<br />
The digital perm!<br />
<br />
<br />
<a name='more'></a><br />
<br />
The digital perm is a perm process designed especially for Asian hair. It is similar to the usual cold perm, where a perm solution is used, except that the perm rollers are attached to a machine (hence the word "digital") that heats the rods. The perm results in a softer wave, unlike the old fashioned, tight curls that would cause a disastrous hair mess! It is best for short or medium length hair. The longer the hair, the curl will straighten out from the weight of the hair, and it will only look curly on the ends. <br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="http://media-cache-ak2.pinimg.com/736x/f7/18/c1/f718c1f190a9d3ab34ced30c7b8678af.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="320" src="http://media-cache-ak2.pinimg.com/736x/f7/18/c1/f718c1f190a9d3ab34ced30c7b8678af.jpg" width="236" /></a></div>
<br />
<h3>
Perm Process:</h3>
<br />
The perm process takes about three hours. First, the hair stylist will cut your hair. They often recommend that you have the hair layered for a "more beautiful curl", but for my perm I actually refused to have it layered, since I have thin hair and layering my hair makes it look super thin. Then the stylist will put perm solution in your hair along with rollers. The hair rollers are usually on the larger side, to create a soft curl or wave. Then you are attached to a crazy looking machine with all sorts of wires for about an hour while the stylist checks on the curls every once in a while. Then the perm solution is neutralized and then the hair is washed.<br />
<br />
This is what the machine looks like:<br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="http://www.hair-styles-secrets-revealed.com/hair/wp-content/uploads/2011/11/digital-perm-machine.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="244" src="http://www.hair-styles-secrets-revealed.com/hair/wp-content/uploads/2011/11/digital-perm-machine.jpg" width="320" /></a></div>
<br />
<br />
<h3>
Styling a Digital Perm: </h3>
<br />
Although a digital perm saves you time from curling your hair, you do still have to style it. Be careful not to comb through your curls, otherwise this will make a frizzy mess. If you need to detangle, do this while you are conditioning your hair, and use your fingers. To style, it is best to do this after you have washed your hair, or you can just wet your hair with a spray bottle. If you air dry your hair, twist segments of your hair together and leave it to dry like that. This will create nice, soft curls. If you are using a blow-dryer, you should also twist segments of your hair, and scrunch the segments upwards. Cup the twists of hair in your hand and blow-dry the hair in your hand. If this twisting technique is not used, your digital permed hair will look merely like a slight wave.<br />
<br />
With a perm, hair that typically does not hold a curl from a curling iron for long will hold a curl for much longer. <br />
<br />
<h3>
How Long Does it Last?</h3>
They say that a digital perm lasts three to four months, but I have had mine for about ten months, and I still have a curl in it.<br />
<br />
<h3>
Where to get a Digital Perm?</h3>
If you have Asian type hair, it is best to go to a salon that specializes in Asian hair. There are many Korean and Japanese hair salons that offer digital perms. Typically, the Korean salons are cheaper than Japanese hair salons. I went to the <a href="https://www.pschair.co.kr/" target="_blank">Park Seung Chol Hair Studio</a> in Garden Grove, California.<a href="http://www.yelp.com/biz/park-seung-chol-hair-studio-garden-grove#query:digital%20perm" target="_blank"> Click here to see their Yelp review</a><a href="http://www.yelp.com/biz/park-seung-chol-hair-studio-garden-grove#query:digital%20perm" target="_blank">s</a>. It was $120 including a cut and a perm. It is $120 for any length hair, and I had pretty long hair. They also gave me some Obsidian hair shine cream, free, with the perm.Unknownnoreply@blogger.com1tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-4026937474861091063.post-47574463874756780922013-07-14T14:08:00.001-07:002013-07-21T04:03:07.629-07:00Sake as Part of the Asian Beauty Routine<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">

<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
Sake, or rice wine, is often used in Japanese beauty products. It can be a simple, cheap addition to your beauty routine. You can not only use it as a natural pink blusher by drinking it if you are Asian, but you can also use it topically to whiten your skin! </div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
<br /></div>
<h3 class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
What does sake do for your skin?</h3>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
Sake contains a skin lightening acid called kojic acid. It is a by-product of the fermentation process, produced by fungi. It inhibits pigmentation and works as a skin lightener, lightening spots and creating an overall lighter skin tone.</div>

<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
There is the famous story about the brand <a href="http://www.sk-ii.com/en/index.aspx" target="_blank">SK-II </a>that includes sake. As the story goes, someone noticed that the hands of workers in a sake brewery in Japan looked young and soft, so scientists isolated an ingredient that they called "Pitera." </div>

<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
Ingredients: Water, Glycerin, Alcohol, Denat fermented rice solution, Citric acid, Sodium citrate fragrance, phenoxyethanol, methylparaben.</div>

<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
It actually smells just like sake, so there must be sake in it. I haven't tried drinking it though! Compared to the SANA toner, it is more lightweight and feels like nothing when you put it on. It is especially nice because I have really oily skin.</div>
<br />
<h4>
Using sake itself as a beauty product:</h4>
You can also just use plain old sake! You can soak a cotton pad to use it as a lightweight cleanser and lightening treatment and wipe your skin with it.<br />
<br />
You can also just use it as a toner and put some in your hand and slap it into your skin. <br />
<br />

<br />
Sake can also be mixed with a floral water (such as orange blossom water, or rose water, which you can get at Middle Eastern or Indian grocery stores for really cheap) and put into a spray bottle to use as a moisturizer and skin refresher during the day. It is especially nice during hot weather.<br />
<br />
<br />
The kojic acid is pretty unstable, so you need to store your sake in a cool, dark place, in a dark colored bottle. The best way to store it will probably be in an airtight container.Unknownnoreply@blogger.com9tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-4026937474861091063.post-34184840106077997632013-01-05T03:13:00.002-08:002013-07-15T02:53:17.728-07:00Tsubaki Oil<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">

Tsubaki oil, also called camellia oil or camellia nut oil, is pressed from the seeds of the camellia flower. The leaves of the camellia plant are used to make teas. This oil has many different uses, from oiling swords to prevent rust, to cooking, and it has various cosmetic applications. It is not really scented unless you buy it fresh from Japan and it will have a light flowery scent.<br />

Geisha use tsubaki oil for caring for their skin. With just a few drops and the warmth of the hands, it can be rubbed onto the face as a moisturizer. The oil is relatively light, doesn't clog pores, and eventually is absorbed into the skin. It contains vitamins A, C, and E, and is said to lighten spots, block UV rays, and prevent wrinkles. It can also be used to gently remove makeup by applying a drop to the eye area and wiping off with a cotton pad.<br />
<br />
Sumo wrestlers use tsubaki oil to make their signature hair style. Tsubaki oil makes a great hair conditioner. It smooths the hair with just a few drops. It is also an ingredient in many shampoos and conditioners, such as the Shiseido Tsubaki line.<br />
<br />
I use this every night before I go to sleep. I pat some all over my face, wipe some on my eyelashes to condition them, and dab a little extra under my eyes and my smile creases. I put any leftover oil on my lips and my hands to moisturize my cuticles. It really is a nice multipurpose oil! <br />
